Author Guidelines

Join the Pan-African conversation on events impacting Global Africa, which comprises continental Africa and its peoples dispersed across the globe. Submit your insights, analyses, and stories to Pambazuka News’ audience for social justice in Africa and the global south.

What we publish:

We are interested in breaking news about, critical analysis of, and theoretical engagement with events happening in Global Africa. We adhere to the principles of Pan-Africanism that is for the people and against imperialist oppression.

We publish advocacy and campaigns; works of art and book reviews; comments, opinions, and analyses covering Pan Africanism, the global south, democracy and governance, land and environment, gender and minorities, food and health, human security, ICT and media.

We welcome pieces from academics, policymakers, social activists, women’s organisations, civil society organisations, writers, artists, poets, bloggers, and commentators for consideration.

What we do not publish:

We reject pieces that legitimate violence against the people of Global Africa in material, ideological, and psychological ways. We will not publish articles that regurgitate imperialist talking points.

Note on the use of Artificial Intelligence:

While Artificial Intelligence (AI) assisted writing including grammar and punctuation checking and revisions has become common practice, we advise authors to not use AI large language models (LLMs) for generating text, drafting/the creation of ideas, or for writing texts. Using LLMs to generate text is unethical involving a lack of and inappropriate attribution of others’ works, words, and ideas. But we have particular concerns regarding the political influence of the global tech oligarchy, the labour exploitation and precarity built into AI systems, and the weaponization of technology as an instrument of repression.

As an editorial collective, we are committed to promoting peace, economic justice, and Pan-African thought and dialogue across Global Africa. The algorithmic materials created by LLMs will lack the radical, critical, and incisive edge of Pan-African critiques of racism, patriarchy, economic violence/capitalism, nationalism, imperialism, and articulating grounded understandings of collective struggle on the continent and beyond.

Note on republishing pieces that appeared elsewhere:

Generally, we do not republish pieces appearing elsewhere unless we request it from you. Republishing will be at the discretion of Pambazuka News editors. Authors submitting published works must note in their submission email that the piece has been submitted or appeared somewhere and indicate the platform or outlet.

How to submit:

1. Send us your piece in Word Document format, Times New Roman, font size 12

2. Length should range from 800 to 3000 words

3. Include references in the form of endnotes

4. At the end of the document include: (a) a short bio of the author(s), (b) a short byline of a maximum of 30 words that succinctly describes your article, (c) include your social media handles (Twitter, BlueSky, Facebook, Instagram, etc.)

5. Authors may also attach, or suggest an image (jpg 700x500) that should accompany the text when published. Suggested images should be clear of copyright issues, not AI generated, and must be referenced.

7. You will receive comments from the editors indicating revisions, and/or notification of acceptance or rejection of the article.
