Lomé, Togo, 28 July, 2005. The African Union finally confirmed the ratification of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) on the Rights of Women in Africa by Cape-Verde. There are now twelve instruments of ratification deposited out of the fifteen that are needed to enter into force. The Council of Ministers of Togo adopted at its meeting of July 27th 2005 in Lomé a bill authorizing the ratification. (Togo-Presse Issue 7082, Thursday July 28th 2005)
For your information, the Protocol to the ACHPR on the Rights of Women in Africa adopted in July 2003 in Maputo (Mozambique) will enter into force thirty days (30) after the deposit of the 15th instrument of ratification. Up to July 22nd, twelve (12) countries have officially ratified and 37 have signed it. Still three precious ratifications are still missing before countries that accessed to it are obliged to implement the principles of the Protocol into their laws.
Some States already ended their administrative and legislative steps but the instrument of ratification still need to be deposited officially at the AU so it becomes effective. Benin, The Gambia, Guinea, Mauritania and Burkina Faso in West Africa are in this situation.
We warmly congratulate our follow-up committees and every women and men who are working on this issue in Cape-Verde and Togo and who will keep on the good work so the instruments of ratification get officially deposited at the AU.
All our follow up committees continue the work. We will keep you informed of new development. Don’t hesitate to let us know about your action.
Yours sincerely,
