Presented by the MRC Health and Development Research Group and WHO
Collaborating Centre for Urban Health, under the auspices of the Pub-
lic Health Programme of the University of the Western Cape.
Introduction
This course is an introduction to the emerging public health issues
associated with urbanisation in developing countries, with an empha-
sis on capacity building within local health and other authorities by
exposing managers and policy makers to important issues in urban
health research. The course is aimed at post-graduate level and a de-
gree or diploma in one of the Health or Life Sciences, or Town Plan-
ning or equivalent practical experience is recommended.
Target group
The course is suitable for professionals whose work relates to public
health, Health Service Managers responsible for primary health care
in peri-urban areas, Senior Environmental Health Officers, Town Plan-
ners and other professionals as well as post-graduate public health
students and researchers. Preference will be given to participants
who will be able to contribute to urban health policy development in
their working environment.
Faculty
Teaching staff comprises a multi-disciplinary team with a wide range
of expertise in urban health research and policy.
Course content:
Module I: Monday to Friday (2 -6 July, 2001)
Course content will include elements of the following:
* progress and prospects for urban health research
* definitions in urban health research
* quantitative and qualitative research in urban settings
* urban health priorities
* maternal and child health
* environmental health
* the healthy cities movement.
Module II: Monday to Friday (9 - 13 July, 2001) - Completion of Ur-
banisation and Health in Developing Countries I is a prerequisite for
doing Module II
Course content will include elements of the following:
* urban health and development
* mapping urban research data
* women's health
* urbanisation and nutrition
* concepts of health
* housing and health
* translating research into policy (including priority setting, com-
munity involvement and effective communication).
Course fees
The cost of attending Module I is ZAR 1,250 but if Module II is at-
tended in the following week, the cost for both Modules is ZAR 1,800.
This includes the cost of tuition and supplied materials. Fees for
applications from outside South Africa are US$ 600 for one Module and
US$ 1,100 for both.
