Zimbabwe: Urgent campaign initiative needs NGO support

Amnesty International is working with Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights and the Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions to coordinate a campaign initiative across Africa on the situation in Zimbabwe. A similar action involving 200 NGOs in June was very successful. We hope you will be willing to work with us [again] on this initiative. We are asking NGOs for help. Amnesty International is working with Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights and the Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions to coordinate a campaign initiative across Africa on the situation in Zimbabwe. A similar action involving 200 NGOs in June was very successful. We hope you will be willing to work with us [again] on this initiative. We are asking NGOs for the following:

• Sign-on to the Joint Appeal if they agree with it. It will be made public with the full list of signatories on 16 November 2005
• On that day we are asking every NGO that has signed on to fax/post the Joint Appeal to their Head of State /Government, and send copies to Presidents Obasanjo (as Chairperson of AU) and Mugabe. We will send a reminder and the contact details to them a week before and a further reminder the day before
• Send an advance copy to press in their country on 14 November with EMBARGO date of 16 November
Also if any NGO representatives are willing to be give local media interviews, we can give to global media a full list of participating countries and contact names.
