Global South & Transnational Struggles

  • Hopkins, A.G. (ed.)'s 'Globalization in World History'

Contributor | Global South & Transnational Struggles
    11.04.2002

In the 1990s globalization was the buzzword; it promises to become ever more important in the first decade of the 21st century. One view suggest that globalization can be dated back to the beginning of the 1980s, while a second view holds that globalization has a long history that can be traced to the 19th century, if not before. This work offers a categorization of types and stages of globalization that existed before the late 20th century. It also emphasizes the fact that globalization has non-Western as well as Western origins. The contributors bring their expertise to bear on themes that give prominence to China, South Asia, Africa and the world of Islam, as well as to Europe and the United States, and span three centuries. ISBN: 0712677402, 2002, Pimlico.

  • GLOBAL FUND: NGO BLASTS DONOR PRESSURE

Contributor | Global South & Transnational Struggles
    21.03.2002

The Health GAP Coalition has said dozens of potential recipient countries caved in to donor pressure and the likelihood of low funds by pre-emptively weakening project proposals they submitted last week to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The case for increased funding can only be made by bolder and more comprehensive proposals, the coalition said. Calling on the Global Fund to post country proposals on its Web site as a matter of transparency and good governance, the coalition announced that, in the meantime, the proposals will be posted on the Website Access Project for the Global Fund, based at Harvard University's Center for International Development.

Contributor | Global South & Transnational Struggles
    21.02.2002

As most of you know, the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance involved nine days of intensive and frequently difficult negotiation. Even after the Conference, there was a difference of views or perceptions that principally concerned the placement of several paragraphs in the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, and which delayed the issuance of the report of the Conference. Nevertheless, despite all of the obstacles that had to be overcome, the Conference was ultimately successful in negotiating a Declaration and Programme of Action by consensus. The report of the Conference was issued and is now before you.

Mike Moore, director-general of the World Trade Organisation, has urged developing countries to support proposals for WTO rules on competition and investment, telling them it is in their own economic interest. It is unusual for a WTO director-general to take a public position on such politically contentious questions. But Mr Moore says in an article in the Financial Times that an agreement on new WTO rules would benefit developing countries by helping them attract foreign direct investment, attack hardcore cartels, tackle corrupt procurement practices and lower export costs.
