Nigeria: Woman sentenced to death by stoning
A 30-year old woman, Safiya Hussaini Tungar-Tudu was sentenced to death by stoning by the upper Sharia court Gwadabawa for committing adultery.

A 30-year old woman, Safiya Hussaini Tungar-Tudu was on Tuesday sentenced
to death by stoning by the upper Sharia court Gwadabawa for committing
adultery.
The sentence was the first since the implementation of the Sharia legal
system in Sokoto State a year ago.
The woman was sentenced accordingly when she pleaded guilty to the offence.
Presenting the case before the court, the police prosecutor, Sergeant
Idris Abubakar told the court that some good Samaritans reported to the
office of the police area commander in Gwadabawa that Safiya was pregnant
without a husband, contrary to the provisions of the Sharia law.
He told the court that following the report, the police arrested the
woman for interrogation.
According to Abubakar, Safiya later confessed that she was impregnated
by one Yakubu Abubakar, also from Gwadabawa.
In his ruling, the court judge, Alhaji Muhammadu Bello Sanyinawal,
sentenced the woman to be stoned to death according to Sharia and discharged
the
alleged husband, Yakubu, for want of evidence.
The judge said the punishement would be carried out after the woman weaned
her child.
Sanyinawal also gave the woman 30 days within which to appeal against
the judgement.
