NIGERIA: Board and card games teach kids about HIV/AIDS

A youth organisation has developed an innovative approach to education and informing people on HIV/AIDS by designing a board and card game series. Designed by Youth Now!, all the games in the series encourage high levels of message retention by teaching youths even during leisure hours. They also provide long hours of game play.

NIGERIA: Board and card games teach kids about HIV/AIDS

To educate and inform people on HIV/AIDS,
civil society groups often rely
on mass gatherings that have an inherently formal
nature like seminars and workshops. Some of the times
too, recourse is made to informal gatherings like
shows using different media.

The major problem with
this approach is that for a youthful audience, message
retention is difficult. This leaves the social
development worker with the problem of encouraging the
level of message retention that will lead to behaviour
and attitude change.

Youth Now! was able to solve this problem by designing
and extensively testing the award winning VYRUZ,
INFECTIONZ and LEARNAIDS board and card game series.
All the games in the series are designed to encourage
high levels of message retention by teaching youths
even during leisure hours. They also provide long
hours of game play. Targeted primarily at a youthful
audience, all the games in the series can be played by
anyone from ages 5 to 100. The games can also be used
as teaching aids during seminars and workshops.

Youth Now! has been at the forefront of developing
alternative and often more effective approaches and
methods of educating and informing youths about the
developmental issues that affect them. The games are a
result of years of research and have worked well in
youth targeted HIV/AIDS campaigns.
