Cuba Shall Never Die
In the spirit of revolutionary solidarity of the University of Dar es Salaam and renewed scholarly activism, UDASA stands with Cuba in this moment of siege.
CUBA SHALL NEVER DIE
We, members of the University of Dar es Salaam Academic Staff Assembly (UDASA) in the United Republic of Tanzania, express our deep concern about the unprecedented humanitarian and geopolitical crisis precipitated by US actions and sanctions against Cuba. We stand with the resilient Cuban people to demand respect for life and strongly urge the lifting of all illegal and illegitimate sanctions the US has unilaterally imposed on Cuba; we advocate for diplomacy.
In the 1950s, when the US overthrew progressive governments all over the globe, from Iran to Guatemala, when the US boots turned Latin and Central America into its backyard, when fascist governments rode roughshod over its people on the Tricontinent, Cuba emerged as the beacon of hope. Under the strong stewardship of Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and Raúl Castro, Cuban guerrillas overthrew US fascist puppet dictator Fulgencio Batista. Since then, Cuba has never looked back.
Cuba’s solidarity with the oppressed and colonised peoples in the Global South was principled, unflinching and selfless. If the Russian and Chinese revolutions gave the world its first socialist nation-states, the Cuban revolution gave the world its finest human values.
On the occasion of the 13th Anniversary of the Moncada Barracks attack in 1975, Fidel Castro declared: “We are a Latin-African nation… African blood flows through our veins.” It was not an empty boast. A significant segment of Cuba’s population traces its heritage to formerly enslaved West and Central Africans. And that is not all. Significantly, thousands of Cuban soldiers shed their blood in Angola for Africa in the fight against the vicious apartheid regime of South Africa, defeating it valiantly in the famous battle of Cuito Cuanavale in 1988.
Since our independence, Cuba has stood side by side with Africa and Tanzania in their fight against colonialism and imperialism. Cuban doctors have provided, and continue to provide, our people (Tanzanians) with legendary medical service. Indeed, we can never forget how Cuban people risked the lives of their sons and daughters to fight Cholera in Haiti, Ebola in Africa, blindness in Latin America and COVID-19 in over 40 countries across the globe.
Today, Cuba faces an existential threat from the warmongering that the Trump regime has unleashed upon the world. Sixty years of US sanctions have failed to strangle the Cuban people. Now, the US is threatening to kill Cuba with its military might.
Cuba shall never die. People of the world will never allow Cuba to die. The revolutionary Cuban people have given us the finest human values. We cherish them. We express our unreserved solidarity with you in your hour of need.
Long live the Cuban Revolution.
