From 14–17 November 2008, close to 2,000 women's rights leaders and activists from around the world met in Cape Town, South Africa, at the 11th Association for Women’s rights In Development (AWID) international forum to discuss the power of movements.

Malawi is a land-locked country in southern Africa. With a population of between 11.5 to 12.5 million and is among the poorest countries in the world. Like many other sub Saharan countries, Malawi is grappling with the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has been caught up in conflict for more than a decade, with devastating effects on its civilian population especially women and children.
