My eyes were transfixed on the television, watching the events unfold at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) election on 9 July in Sunyani. From time to time, my attention was distracted by the loud music from a Nigerian ‘old school’ party two houses away.

Access to water in Ghana has always been one of the most contested issues in the history of the country and this was so even before the country gained independence from Britain.

The recent commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the murder of Patrice Lumumba, the first prime minister of the Congo, has touched off a series of reminiscences in my mind, which I’d like to share with those interested in the modern history of our continent.
