Countering the motion: 'This House believes that Namibia is a shining example of post-colonial peace, democracy and development.'

Good evening ladies and gentlemen.

It was with a heavy heart but without remorse that I accepted this role to act as a proponent against the motion. I could not wish for more than being able to support it. When we celebrated our hard won independence 20 years ago, we shared similar hopes and expectations.

Namibia's Ministry of Works says it does a lot to uplift local contractors, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Despite the financial crisis that has wrecked global economies, the volume of trade between Namibia and China has grown, resulting in commerce between the two countries exceeding US$550 million in 2009. Diplomatic ties between the two are sound.

The Namibian Police and or the Office of Prosecutor General as well as the Lower Criminal Division of the Namibian Judiciary are making themselves vulnerable to charges of discrimination and political bias, owing to the inconsistency with which they are handling certain criminal cases.

Namibia’s National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) is gravely appalled by what appears to be an escalating spate of misguided and, sometimes, punitive attacks on the independence of judges in the country.
