Voices from Africa

A recent publication by the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service - Voices from Africa 10 - is focused on NGO Responses to HIV/AIDS. It includes country experiences from Burkina Faso, Morocco, Mozambique, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Cote d'Ivoire, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Malawi and Nigeria. The issue of increasing the involvement of the target group in the design and implementation of the activity is one that comes out strongly in the material. So too does the role of the media. It will be available online shortly.

Many of the projects described are working directly with people living with
HIV/AIDS. The Mozambique article has some strong testimony from women.
Several of the pieces deal in depth with the issue of stigma and how to
approach it.

The publication is not yet available on line. When it does become available,
you can find it at:

In the meantime, print copies can probably be requested from UN NGLS, Palais
des Nations, CH-1211 Geneva 10, Switzerland.

Exchange is a DFID funded 3-year programme that is attempting to identify
and share learning around effective health communication. The UNAIDS
definition of Best Practice - 'the continuous process of learning,
feedback, reflection and analysis of what works (or does not work) and
why' - summarises eloquently what this programme is trying to encourage. We
are particularly interested in strengthening the involvement of groups and
organisations in developing countries in the analysis of what makes for
effective health communication. For more info, see our website:
