A madwoman sat next to me yesterday, on my flight from Paris to New York. She was in her twenties, and strung tight as piano wire, and professed to be half-German, half-Egyptian. She’d been subjected to a random search back at Charles de Gaulle.

Africa today is undergoing tremendous change. This fact is reluctantly acknowledged by the international community, which continues to see Africa through the prism of ignorance and obfuscation. Part of this change affects women, and the women’s rights movement all over the continent.
