It is a privilege for me to be invited by Pambazuka News to gaze into my crystal ball and write a piece about what I realistically see and share my thoughts about where Africa is heading in the next 50 years.

The African and international elite have just concluded the African Development Bank’s 50th anniversary celebrations and annual meeting under the theme: “The Next 50 Years: The Africa We Want”.

‘Making predictions is hard. Especially about the future’, said the famous American baseball player, Lawrence ‘Yogi’ Berra facetiously. Likewise, predicting whether there is light at the end of the tunnel in 2050 and beyond is hard. Especially about the Dark Continent.

Africa’s challenges over the next 50 years will be complex and multifaceted across its diverse, yet interconnected, states, nations and communities.

There was much to be celebrated when the African Union (AU) convened to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its formation.
