A group of 500 Ghanaians who managed to arrive back home from the fighting in Libya told harrying stories of how difficult life had been for them.

‘Africa the key to global economic growth’. This was a refreshingly honest recent headline from the Washington Post, but hardly one that qualifies as news. African labour and resources – as any decent economic historian will tell you – has been key to global economic growth for centuries.

Amidst all the media furore about the fall of Tripoli from the grasp of the Libyan government, it's not easy to get a clear picture of what things look like under the new rulers.
