The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) is a regional specialized human rights organization. It was established in 1994. The CIHRS enjoys a special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. It also has an observatory status with the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights. The CIHRS is also a member to the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) and International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX).

Background about CIHRS
The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) is a regional
specialized human rights organization. It was established in 1994. The
CIHRS enjoys a special consultative status with the United Nations Economic
and Social Council. It also has an observatory status with the African
Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights. The CIHRS is also a member to the
Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) and International
Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX). The CIHRS' main task is to analyze
and explain the difficulties faced by the process of implementing the human
rights law in the Arab world. It strives to promote human rights in Arab
countries through the development of intellectually vigorous and novel
approaches conducive to surmounting problems of implementation.
Job Purpose
The Program Officer is responsible for providing leadership and daily
management of the human rights education work under the direct supervision
of the Executive Director and Program Coordinator. Strong coordination with
other CIHRS program and senior officers is strongly required.
Major responsibilities of the position
- Contributing to the defining of CIHRS priorities and development of its
general plans;
- Proposing and drafting the program detailed plans within the framework
of the general plans of the CIHRS;
- Designing training activities and defining necessary resources necessary
for implementation (material, trainers, equipment etc.);
- Leading the implementation of the planned activities under the program,
monitoring, evaluating and drafting regular narrative reports about the
activities;
- Facilitating training sessions including working groups;
- Contributing to publications and materials on human rights education
(writing, evaluation etc);
- Contributing to the media and publicity activities revolve around the
program activities;
- Administrating the regional human rights education Listserve (CIHRS will
provide training before starting the job);
- Developing CIHRS relationships with partners and institutions working in
the field of human rights education regionally and internationally;
- Contributing to human rights education material resources
Qualifications
* A university degree in relevant social science field (e.g. Political
science, Anthropology, Sociology).
* Knowledge of and experience in several of the following fields:
- Human rights standards and international humanitarian law
- Planning for and designing of human rights education activities;
- Familiarity with the state of the art in the field of human rights
education;
- interpersonal skills including leadership and participatory skills
- Fluency in oral and written of both Arabic and English;
- Advanced communication skills (oral and written) and proven ability to
draft clearly and succinctly;
- Administrative and organizational skills;
- Computer knowledge (MS Word, Internet, Power Point)
Ability to establish and maintain contacts with NGOs, universities,
representatives of inter-governmental institutions and to work effectively
in a multicultural environment. Analytical skills, resourceful and
organised work practices with capacity to deal effectively with changing
priorities, ability to keep deadlines and deal with several projects
simultaneously.
Conditions
* At least three years of relevant experience;
* Readiness to travel within and outside the region.
* Readiness to work extra hours when required.
