The Emerging Powers in Africa Project is issuing a call for grant proposals. The grants are aimed at examining the political, economic, social and cultural impact of the emerging powers footprint in Africa. The grant is specifically related to empowering civil society actors in gaining the appropriate knowledge and developing the necessary tools to articulate an informed perspective on the emerging powers in Africa and the corresponding impact. This call for proposals is open to NGOs, CSOs, NGO networks and social movements who seek to popularize, monitor and advocate for the ratification of key African Union legal instruments and implementation of policy standards in
Cameroon.

A recent festival of arts, culture and conversations sought to move debates about East Africa’s integration away from elite spaces to the grassroots. It was an insightful experience whose basic message was that without active involvement of the region’s peoples the East African Community remains an elite dream.

For over 50 years, we’ve been campaigning for human rights wherever justice, freedom and truth are denied. We’ve reshaped policies, challenged governments and taken corporations to task. In doing so, we’ve changed thousands of lives for the better. Join Amnesty at our new regional office in Kenya and you will too.

We're looking for a campaigner to contribute to our campaign against human rights violations in Central Africa. Working as part of the West and Central Africa Team at the Regional Office in Dakar, you will work on a range of projects, including our campaign on impunity in Central African Republic, conditions of detention in Chad and the rights of LGBTI groups in Cameroon. You will act as a focal point providing advice and support to our worldwide membership, including devising campaigning strategies, preparing written and other campaigning materials and providing research support.

Mazrui was a Creolite, that is, one who had the capacity to mix languages, and became entangled in the cultures as well as the identities of these languages. He was a language bargainer, shopping for the appropriate genre in which to negotiate in the marketplace of ideas.

Comrade Kimani remained steadfast in his commitment to the liberation of Kenya ever since he joined the reform movement in the early 1990s. Though uncelebrated nationally, the social justice movement in Kenya is the poorer with his untimely death.

Thomas Deve died on September 7, 2014. He was a visionary, Pan-Africanist and thinker in human rights and arts circles. Here is to him at a commemoration held in Nairobi.
