The Zambian government says the return of peace to Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will lead to a reduction of the number of refugees in the country.

Police recorded a "warn and caution" statement on 2 July from Masautso Phiri, editor of "Today" newspaper, who voluntarily presented himself for questioning at police headquarters one week after he was initially summoned. Phiri told the Zambia Independent Media Association (ZIMA) that police questioned him about a story entitled "Mwanawasa paves way for coup?" in the newspaper's 3 to 10 June edition.

Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, who became the first president when Zambia attained independence in October 1954, told participants at a United Nations Development Programme meeting in Johannesburg that HIV/Aids was not a death sentence. “If I had been found positive, I still would have used that status to campaign against the pandemic, as I do now,” said the 79 year-old former president.

"Today" newspaper editor, Masautso Phiri, has defied an order to present himself for interviews at police headquarters in Lusaka. A Zambian court has dropped charges against six men who were accused of stealing state finances - along with former President Frederick Chiluba. But the court in Lusaka reserved the right to re-arrest the six if new evidence came to light.

Former president Frederick Chiluba faces another arrest over alleged abuse of the Zamtrop account. According to sources, Chiluba, former Ambassador to the United States Atan Shansonga, former finance permanent secretary Stella Chibanda, former intelligence chief Xavier Chungu and former Ministry of Finance chief economist Bede Mphande were listed for re-arrest on fresh charges related to the Zamtrop account.

A Zambian Demographic Education Survey (ZDES) report for 2002 has revealed that education has become more widespread, leading to a significant improvement in girl-child education. A nation-wide survey carried out among primary school children between August and October last year showed that there had been a dramatic improvement in the participation of girls in education.

An Auditor General's report has confirmed the reported disappearance of 1,000 oil tankers with US $13.5 million worth of fuel imported between 1999 and 2000. According to a report dated October 31, 2002 and tabled before the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee, the petroleum products destined for Zambia crossed the countries of origin but did not get to Indeni Oil Refinery.

President Levy Mwanawasa's anti-corruption crusade has reached into the heart of his government and claimed the jobs of both his vice-president and finance minister. Mwanawasa at the weekend released an eight-page letter addressed to former vice-president Enoch Kavindele and finance minister Emmanuel Kasonde who were both sacked on Thursday. The letter for the first time publicly outlined the reasons for their dismissal, citing alleged corruption and disregard for tender and procurement procedures.

Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa's former special assistant for press and public relations, Arthur Yoyo, and a former managing editor of the Times of Zambia, Emmanuel Nyirenda, were on Wednesday arrested for corruption.

Human rights campaigners in Zambia have won a major victory when President Levy Mwanawasa recently refused to sign death sentences, and commuted all sentences to life imprisonment. The criminal justice system in Zambia imposes the death penalty for three offences: murder, treason and aggravated robbery. Home Affairs Minister Ronnie Shipakwasha, a close ally of Mwanawasa, who is opposed to the death penalty, says: "The president, in his own wisdom, has gone ahead and refused to carry out the death penalty and commuted them to life imprisonment.” There are about 250 people on death row in Zambia.

Women in Zambia's North-Western province are being helped with the knowledge and services to prevent HIV/AIDS through a project aimed at empowering the hardest hit population group. Last month, the NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC) - an umbrella body of women's organisations in the region - and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), gathered in Solwezi to open 'Bumi House'. This centre will become the base for the programme.

Walking the corridors of Zambia's largest hospital gives the average visitor, let alone its patients, an overwhelming sense of despair. Lusaka's University Teaching hospital lacks drugs and equipment. Its doctors and support staff are poorly paid and morale is low, impacting on the quality of care provided to the long-suffering patients. Last week, the almost 300-strong Resident Doctors Association (RDA) went on a two-day strike, demanding better pay and conditions. They returned to work after the government agreed to a 120 percent to 300 percent salary hike, but remain cautious over whether the government will stick to the deal.

Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa says he'd like a woman to succeed him once he leaves. In the past, only two women have ever stood for president, both in 2001. Neither faired well at the polls. At the moment, many Zambians are split about having a woman president. Even though some women think it's unlikely to happen, they say the national and international dialogue sparked as a result of the President's comments, is a great thing.
