Women's peace groups receive greater recognition
Women and groups recognized by the Millennium Peace Prize for Women, launched by UNIFEM and International Alert on March 8 this year, are continuing to receive recognition for their courageous efforts. One of the award winners, Women in Black, a worldwide network of women against war, has been nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. So far only 10 of more than 100 Nobel Peace Prize recipients have been women.
The Leitana Nehan Women's Development Agency, a Papua New Guinea group working to rebuild trust between fractured communities has been nominated to represent women’s interests in peace negotiations with the Papua New Guinea national government. The recognition also enabled them to participate in the July 2001 United Nations Conference on Small Arms and Light Weapons, as an NGO delegate to the Pacific Islands Forum in New York.
