Assassinations and other forms of violence targeting critics of the State have been part and parcel of Guyana’s political history. Revelation that Walter Rodney was murdered by the State must now force the people of Guyana to confront the reality of state brutality, seeking to end it once and for all.

Robert Sobukwe died of cancer on 27 February 1978 after decades of abuse by the apartheid regime. His contributions to the end of this evil system and to pan-African thought remain outstanding. For Africa to be for Africans, pan-Africanism should be a lived experience, not an ideological project for political rhetoric.

Two weeks after the report of the commission of inquiry into the death of Dr Walter Rodney was presented to the government of Guyana, an international pressure group is calling on President Granger to make the findings public. Dr. Rodney’s family, Guyanese and admirers of the radical intellectual and organizer around the world need to know the truth about his death 36 years ago.

A leaked report of the Commission of Inquiry into the death of revered historian and political activist Walter Rodney has confirmed what many people have believed for long: that Rodney was assassinated by the government of Guyana. The regime of Prime Minister Forbes Burnham was worried by the growing popularity of Rodney’s party, the Working People’s Alliance.

Drama unfolded in the Guyanese capital Georgetown as the official commission of inquiry into the assassination of celebrated Pan-African intellectual and activist, Dr. Walter Rodney, handed over its report to the government. The commission has encountered numerous difficulties designed to sabotage its work since inception in 2013. It remains to be seen whether the President of Guyana will release the findings.

African American political organizations played a key role in influencing Nkrumah from the 1930s, until his removal from power in 1966 and beyond. Although the coup was designed by the U.S. to halt the advance of the African Revolution and the internationalization of the struggle of African Americans, solidarity efforts accelerated from the late 1960s through the 1990s when the last vestiges of white-minority rule were eliminated in South Africa and Namibia.

After three days of deliberations and considering questions of the heroes and heroines of the Pan African world, the Colloquium passed three resolutions: Commission of Inquiry into the death of Walter Rodney - Time to complete work; Resolution on the need for Robust intervention of the African Union in Burundi to stop genocidal violence and acts of genocide; and A Petition for the Government of the Dominican Republic to Stop Ethnic Cleansing Against Citizens of Haitian Descent.

We, members of the Pan African Movement-East Africa together with the Global Pan African Movement make this call to the citizens of East Africa, all peace loving Africans globally and concerned citizens of the world to join together in this petition to mobilize our resources and empower our voices to demand immediate action to halt the deteriorating conditions in Burundi. There is an ongoing loss of life and a general disruption and breakdown of law, social cohesion and personal security fuelling the fears of a possible reemergence of ethno-political violence and genocide in the Great Lakes region. The situation threatens to undermine all efforts to establish regional stability and peace.

Just like in the last election, the large number of Kenyans in the diaspora are unlikely to vote in 2017, despite that right being guaranteed by the constitution. The electoral commission simply has neither the logistical capacity nor the funds to organise diaspora voting.

The North American Delegation to the 8th Pan African Congress is holding a preparatory meeting to mobilize grassroots representation to the 2nd phase (to be held in 2016) on October 30?31, 2015 in New York City at Medgar Evers College. The first phase of the 8th Pan African Congress was held in Ghana in March 2015.

Pan-Africanism is part of African heritage. Governments to date have proven unwilling to implement this responsibility. That is why Pan-Africanism is the primary responsibility of Pan-Africanists, not governments. If it is to retain its integrity, Pan-Africanism should be wary of governments. If Pan-Africanism is co-opted and controlled by governments, then we are finished.

South Africa is keen to strenghten its ties with Jamaica and other countries of the Caribbean in efforts to extend African solidarity. This cooperation is not only at the level of government. The numbers of unarmed Black youth murdered with impunity by state security agents in the US continue to rise. These killings demand a pan-African response. The African Union, which officially counts the Diaspora as its sixth region, ought to come out clearly and demand an end to these murders.

The rare display of groundedness and humility by a sitting African head of state was enough to catapult Nyerere on to the path to canonization. His daring socialist experiment and the decision to leave office at the end of his term, something that remains difficult for African presidents, are significant highlights of his pro-people politics.

This year is the deadline for MDGs, and the global community is set to come up with new set of development goals SGs in September at UN summit in New York. The Addis Ababa 3rd International Conference on Finance for Development held last week laid a foundation for further conversation on how to end extreme poverty and pursue the other post-MDG goals.
