The Aiding Youth for Life Country Coordinator (CC) position is an internship that will last 6 months and is dependant upon funding. The candidate will be operating centrally out of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The CC will act as the central representative of the AYL Board of Directors in Tanzania, and will be required to host governments, and international and national organisations; develop new programs; manage security and personnel.

A study of children in Kenya and Tanzania has identified a gene mutation that can significantly cut the risk of becoming seriously ill with malaria. Researchers led by Brice Weinberg of the Veterans Affairs and Duke University Medical Centers in Durham, North Carolina, United States, found that children with the mutation were nearly 90 per cent less likely to develop severe forms of the disease.

While the government has retained ownership of forests centrally, at the local level people have used forest resources without restriction, leading to the over exploitation of many forest resources and a lack of sense of ownership and responsibility among forest communities. This is according to a paper produced by Tanzania Online, which also examines government plans to transfer management rights for forests while retaining tenure centrally and confusion over how the division of rights can occur legally.

Reports from Tanzania say parliament has passed a new anti-terrorism law which gives the police and immigration officials sweeping powers to arrest suspected illegal immigrants or anyone thought to have links with terrorists. Under the new law, passed by the National Assembly in the capital, Dodoma, police will not need warrants to detain people suspected of committing those offences.

In the context of four of the OECD Development Assistance Committee's (DAC) development objectives -- reducing extreme poverty; providing universal primary education; lowering infant and maternal mortality; and transmitting health -- this book is particularly timely. The authors demonstrate that in the case of very poor countries, policies aimed at universal provision of education and health services benefit the poor significantly more than more expensive targeted schemes. The book draws attention to the absolute need for coherence and co-ordination so that schools are not built without teachers and dispensaries without drugs. Moreover, national macroeconomic policies have to be realistic if the health and education sectors are not to be deprived of resources. Finally, the quality of governance is shown to have a direct effect on the efficiency of social spending.

Since the beginning of November, 2002, several activities have been carried out both in Dodoma and Dar es Salaam. The most important achievement has been to engage members of Parliament, the media and general public to understand the bill and flaws embedded in it. We received good responses from a number of MPs regarding the campaign.

Reducing the threats to ill health in developing countries is not just a question of encouraging more research. It also requires attention to the social context in which health problems arise. And tackling this social context requires a political commitment that is, in many ways, as important (and difficult) to secure as extra financing.

Sebastian Chuwa, Tanzanian botanist and conservationist, was honoured as recipient of an Associate Laureate award by the Rolex Awards for Enterprise committee at The Royal Institution of Great Britain in London, England. NGOs in the country call for the support and pressure from you, to bear on our government to stop passing the bill into law this November. This should happen as we need more time as NGOs and Tanzanian citizens to fully participate in the making of the law, which is going to govern our sector. Any law that does not respect basic human rights, as enshrined in the country’s constitution is bound to be barbaric and a deterrent to development, rather than an enabling tool for social prosperity of the people of Tanzania.

A cholera outbreak believed to have originated from Tanzania’s border district of Kyela has hit Karonga district, where one person died over the weekend and a total of 15 cases have been reported.

From Karonga comes a warning that, as the rainy season approaches, not only must we prepare for early planting, but also for a running battle with cholera.
