South Africa: Curative Rape: A Crime of Hate

South Africa has just released it's latest crime statistics. writes that many "anti-constitutionalists" are calling for the return of hanging as the number of violent crimes are on the increase. But for this group of people, violent crime does not include hate speech - verbal abuse against the LGBTI community. Trengove Jones goes on to point to the links between those calling for a return of hanging for murder and those who scream for the curative rape of lesbians.

"On SAfm’s Morning Talk last week, caller after caller vomited out appalling hate speech. Diminishing the murders, one speaker said “society cannot be expected to accept (lesbianism)”. Another happily noted that “the best way to deal with them is to rape the lesbianism out of them”. Seeming to condone intellectual confusion as well as murder, one stated that “the ethics of our community does not allow lesbianism” and that “I am willing to enforce nature as far as must be”. And, of course, “We need to revisit the constitution.”
