SOUTH AFRICA: conference on HIV/AIDS
An all-Africa meeting of civil society groups and
non-governmental organizations working in the area of
HIV/AIDS care and treatment, will take place from August
22-24 in Cape Town, South Africa. The meeting is jointly
organised by Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), Medecins Sans
Frontieres/South Africa, Catholic AIDS Action Namibia, Kara
Trust Zambia and a host of other organisations

The meeting, which will hold just before the World Summit
on Sustainable Development (WSSD) taking place in
Johannesburg, South Africa has the following objectives:
- set the foundation for a pan- African activist movement
to fight for access to HIV/AIDS
treatment
- create an African voice to address international agencies
such as the Global Fund, the World Trade Organisation, the
World Bank and others
- discuss the international framework for treatment access
and opportunities it presents for action against AIDS in
Africa, and
- define a set of resolutions to pre-empt the World Summit
on Sustainable Development's focus on health, HIV/AIDS and
development.

The meeting is a follow up to consultations held with
treatment activists at the Treatment Congress held in South
Africa in June and during the 14th International AIDS
conference held in Barcelona, Spain. It will also highlight
the need for access for expanded access to HIV/AIDS
treatment in Africa and develop strategies to ensure access
to treatment for African countries.

In addition, delegates from this meeting will represent
African activists at the WSSD and ensure that AIDS
treatment is put on the front burner of health and
development issues to be deliberated on during the Summit.
