WOMEN PREPARE FOR EARTH SUMMIT 2002
The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD 2002) will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa from 02 to 11 September 2002. In preparation for this important event, the Women's Environment and Development Organization (WEDO) is calling on concerned women's organisations to participate in the global consultation that aims to come up with a Women's Action Agenda for a Healthy Planet 2002(WAA2002). This will be launched in the World Summit.
WOMEN PREPARE FOR EARTH SUMMIT 2002
The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD 2002) will be held in
Johannesburg, South Africa from 02 to 11 September 2002.
In preparation for this important event, the Women's Environment and
Development Organization (WEDO) is calling on concerned women's
organisations to participate in the global consultation that aims to come
up with a Women's Action Agenda for a Healthy Planet 2002 (WAA2002). This
will be launched in the World Summit.
The various consultations on the WAA2002 will follow this schedule (venues
and other details of meetings may be requested from WEDO):
· Identification of themes (June-July) 2002
· Preparation of first draft (August to November 2002)
· Broad consultation of first of WAA2002 (December 2001 to April 2002)
· Endorsement of second draft of WAA2002 (April to May 2002)
· Publication of final version of WAA2002 and distribution to
government and NGO leaders at WSSD 2002 (June to September 2002)
Themes have already been identified. They are the following:
Theme 1: Agenda 21, Participation and the Multi-Stakeholder process
Theme 2: Globalisation: Transparency and Accountability in Transitional
Institutions
Theme 3: Environmental Dimensions of Armed Conflict: Role of Women
Theme 4: Free Market Ideology, Sustainable Production and Consumption
Theme 5: Democracy, Human Rights and women's Access to and Control of
Resources
Theme 6: Protecting Environmental Health and Security
Theme 7: Gender and Environmental Dimensions of Population Policies
Theme 8: Protecting Indigenous Knowledge, Biodiversity and Sustainable Land
Use
Theme 9: The Gender Dimension of Sustainable Cities
Theme 10: Education, Communication and Information Technologies
