Women's Rights and Economic Change Manager

Background

The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) is an
international membership organization connecting, informing and
mobilizing people and organizations committed to achieving gender
equality, sustainable development and women's human rights. A dynamic
network of thousands of women and men around the world, AWID members
are researchers, academics, students, educators, activists, business
people, policy-makers, development practitioners, funders, and more.
Our goal is to cause policy, institutional and individual change that
will improve the lives of women and girls everywhere. We do this by
facilitating ongoing debates on fundamental and provocative issues as
well as by building the individual and organizational capacities of
those working for women's empowerment and social justice.

Over the next three years AWID will deliver two major programs: first,
the 2002 International Forum on Women's Rights and Development:
Reinventing Globalization, and secondly, an innovative Strategic
Communications Program.

1) AWID's International Forum on Women's Rights and Development:
Reinventing Globalization. Now known as the largest recurring
international summit on gender equality outside of the United Nations
system, the Forum is a unique opportunity for the global women's
movement to assess our successes and failures and forge new
strategies. In October 3-6 2002, hundreds of leaders, scholars, and
practitioners will convene in Mexico to "reinvent globalization" for
women's rights and development.

2) The Strategic Communications program. In a world of information
overload, this program aims to provide the most practical, accessible
as well as multi-perspective information and analyses to our diverse
membership through email, web, and print communications. On-going
before and after the Forum, these communications continue to build
bridges between sectors, regions, ages, and disciplines.

AWID has four cross-cutting themes for both of these programs: Young
Women and Leadership, Feminist Organizational Development, Gender
Equality and New Technologies and Women's Rights and Economic Change.

*** Women's Rights and Economic Change Theme Manager

The purpose of this position is to direct the Women's Rights and
Economic Change "theme program" as part of AWID's Strategic
Communications Program. The goals of this position include:

a) building the capacity of gender equality advocates in the South and
North, including young women, to understand the processes of
globalization in relation to gender equality and sustainable
development informed by the convergence of women's rights and
development;

b) developing viable policy recommendations, economic alternatives
and/or approaches that ensure gender and economic justice derived
from both the women's rights and gender and development fields;

c) influencing international financial and private sector
institutions (as well as national governments and civil society) in
order ensure that new gender sensitive ideas created from both
women's rights and development frameworks are translated into
concrete actions in the years to come.

At the heart of AWID's Women's Rights and Economic Change Theme is the
belief that working towards a global economic system in which rights
are guaranteed will require close collaboration between the fields of
women's human rights and economic development. Each has developed
significant bodies of knowledge and experience to inform practice, has
effectively mobilized women to empower themselves within their
communities, has influenced institutional change, and is working
towards the same ultimate goals of gender equality, freedom, and
sustainable development.
