Addressing widespread poverty is the single most important policy challenge facing South Africa. Not only is poverty high when benchmarked against other emerging economies of the world, but also the rate of poverty reduction has been slow.

It was Benjamin Disraeli who said: "The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example”. Fidel Castro’s legacy to the world mirrors this quotation accurately.

The dawn of the 21^st century has ushered in a plethora of global problems and challenges, not least of them being issues of poverty, inequality, social injustice, climate change, globalisation, socio-political crises, unemployment and food insecurity.
