Legal Officers

The Institute for Human Rights & Development in Africa is a pan-African
human rights organisation with its headquarters in Banjul, the Gambia.
The Institute specialises in the African regional human rights system,
including impact litigation in national and international fora based on
African human rights treaties and training in the procedures of African
treaty mechanisms.

The Institute is recruiting two programme officers to start work from
February 2002. Under the supervision of the Director of Programmes and
the Executive Director, the programme officers will organise training
workshops, conducting litigation before the African regional human
rights institutions, and undertake research on human rights issues.
Programme officers will also participate in programme planning,
fund-raising, and reporting.

Programme officers must possess the following qualifications:

- Degree in law from a recognised university
- Experience with human rights work, preferably with NGOs
- Computer literacy
- Good writing skills
- Fluency in English or French and working knowledge of
the other language
- Knowledge of the OAU and the African regional human
rights system

Preference will be given to citizens of Africans countries.

Compensation is $20-25,000 yearly, tax-free, depending on experience.
Retirement benefits and family health coverage is provided.

L'Institut est une ONG pan-africaine ayant son siège en Gambie.
L'Institut recrute deux chargé (e)(s) de programmes.

Qualifications:

- Titulaire de diplôme supérieur en droit dans une université
reconnue,
- Expérience sur la promotion et la protection des droits humains
en Afrique de préférence dans une ONG,
- Expérience en matière de contentieux,
- Bonne aptitude rédactionnelle
- Bonne Maîtrise des outils informatiques,
- Maîtrise du francais ou l'anglais et avoir une connaissance de l'autre
langue.

Salaire entre US$20,000 - 25,000 par an (exempt d'impts) en fonction
de l'expérience, couverture médicale et indemnités de retraite.
Date probable: Février 2002. Date limite de dépôt de candidatures:
10 Décembre 2001.
