AMANITARE, the African Partnership for sexual and reproductive health and rights, celebrates African Women’s Health and Rights Day on February 4th 2004. Women’s organisations across Africa will mark the day which this year commemorates the 10th anniversary of the 1994 Cairo International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) to raise awareness of sexual and reproductive health and rights at the local and national levels with the slogan: “I Celebrate, Protest, Demand – A decade of celebrating progress and reclaiming our rights”. AMANITARE partner organisations will organise activities on February 4th to raise awareness of sexual and reproductive health and rights at the local and national levels with the slogan: “I Celebrate, Protest, Demand – A decade of celebrating progress and reclaiming our rights”. This year’s activities will also call on the governments to fully implement the 20-year ICPD Programme of Action (PoA).
The ICPD PoA laid the foundations for AMANITARE’s mandate. It is celebrated for establishing international commitment to women’s rights and women’s empowerment as central components for the attainment of sexual and reproductive health and rights for all.
“It has long been recognised that the development of Africa is dependent on empowering women and securing their rights, including their sexual and reproductive health and rights. It is also recognised that the ICPD agenda is central to achievement of the Millenium Development Goals. AMANITARE asks that communities, donors and governments go further and take concrete steps to improve African women’s health and rights,” said Nahid Toubia, Senior Staff Advisor, AMANITARE.
Since February 4th 2000, AMANITARE has organised activities on this day to bring attention to key sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) issues, and for African women to celebrate and reclaim their health and rights. Events this year are being held in Gambia, Ghana, Kenya,Nigeria, Sudan, Sierra Leone and South Africa Tanzania

AMANITARE is the African Partnership for the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls. The partnership currently has 51 partners in 17 African countries. It is an initiative of RAINBO, an international African led NGO working to promote African women’s rights to sexual and reproductive health.
The International Conference on Population and Development marked a milestone in the history of development and women’s rights. The programme of action, adopted by 179 countries, including 49 in Africa included the agreement to work towards universal education, reduction of infant, child and maternal mortality and access to reproductive health services for all by 2015.
