Horn, East and Central Africa Region
Based in Uganda, this is an accompanied post on an open ended contract;
starting salary from GBP 18,250 net of tax p.a. plus attractive benefits
including medical cover, housing, school fees.
Background
Identity is a key driver of conflicts and social exclusion in the Horn,
East and Central Africa (HECA) region. In particular, women in HECA are
more likely to be disadvantaged than men in their social group in almost
all respects. We believe that the only way to develop appropriate
strategies for tackling poverty and suffering effectively is by ensuring
that we are clear about the different ways that women and men from
different ethnic and cultural backgrounds experience poverty and how
different interventions will affect them. We need a Gender and Diversity
Advisor to help our programme teams develop the right skills and approaches
to make this a reality.
Profile
You have substantial experience in a similar role and understand the key
gender and diversity issues and the challenges related to addressing them.
You have evidence of your professional competence in gender and diversity
work. You can think strategically and apply this skill to develop and
implement strategies for mainstreaming gender and diversity into relief and
development programmes.
Along with these leadership, analytical and planning skills, you are a
practical person. You have a strong capacity to support others, including
demonstrable success in helping women and men to understand and articulate
the benefits of equality and implement steps to achieving it. You are
comfortable with activities such as developing simple, culture-specific
gender analysis tools. You have hands-on experience working with women and
men to identify and address their issues.
Naturally, you are a good communicator and negotiator. You will work in a
way that understands and respects cultures and contexts, and you will
motivate and inspire teams to work with you. If you were able to work in
French as well as English, that would be a real advantage.
It is important that you are able to travel fairly frequently and for
several weeks at a time.
