Request for proposals (RFP) FOR SPECIAL GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS WITH UNOCAL FOUNDATION (UF)

Unocal Corporation works to achieve its vision of “improving the lives of people wherever we work.” Unocal strives to make this vision real through:

- Long-term Community Relationships That Foster Mutual Respect
- Community Initiatives and Action

The Unocal Foundation seeks proposals from nonprofit organizations interested in joining with UF to create special global partnerships (2-4) to address critical issues facing children and youth; the environment; or business-civil society collaboration on difficult issues. UF’s overriding goal in these partnerships is to undertake worthwhile work that neither Unocal nor applicants could successfully achieve alone.

Unocal will consider proposals in the following three areas and anticipate a total of 2-4 partnerships:
- Children/youth - education, health, child/youth development, or children’s rights
- Environment - conservation, sustainable forestry, habitat preservation, or pollution reduction
- Business-Civil Society Collaboration to Address Difficult Challenges - capacity building, microenterprise development, poverty alleviation, corruption and accountability, human rights, or discrimination and ethnic minorities

The only eligible primary applicants are:
- Nonprofit charitable organizations with current 501(c)(3) status from the United States Internal Revenue Service that have the organizational capacity to take on a multi-year global partnership initiative relating to children/youth; environment; or business-civil society engagement.
- Officially recognized and registered charitable organizations outside the United States that have the organizational capacity to take on a multi-year global partnership initiative relating to children/youth; environment; or business-civil society engagement.

Other types of institutions (e.g., informal community groups and associations, government agencies, multilateral agencies, businesses) may be parties to the application and may play key roles, but they are not eligible as the primary applicant.

Project not considered

In this initiative, we will not consider projects in which the primary purpose of the partnership is:
- Research
- Conferences / Seminars / Workshops
- Political or Religious Activities
- Advocacy, Communications, or Fundraising Campaigns
- Endowment or Infrastructure Projects or Campaigns

Application procedures

To apply, you must submit the following materials:
- 2-page Application Form
- Project Concept - a 2-3 page description of the proposed effort (context, rationale, overall budget, strategies, possible players, value added, likely results, etc.)
- Organizational Status Copy of documentation confirming charitable/organizational status

Interested organizations should review the eligibility and selection criteria and follow the application procedures. The first step in the process is to submit an application and concept proposal, which is to be no longer than 2-3 pages and is to arriva at UF by 31 October, 2001. UF will invite a small number of applicants (5-15) to discuss and present their ideas in a more detailed proposal.
