Kabissa to host workshop on using new technologies at WMD assembly

Hundreds of Democracy Activists Will Convene In Durban
The World Movement for Democracy will convene on February 1-4, 2004 in Durban,
South Africa, for its Third Assembly. Building Democracy for Peace, Development
and Human Rights, is the theme of the Assembly, which will take place at the
International Convention Centre in Durban. More than 600 democracy activists,
practitioners, and scholars from more than 100 countries in every region of the
world, including Belarus, Burma, China, Colombia, Cuba, Democratic Republic of
Congo, Iraq, Liberia, Mongolia, Serbia and Venezuela will discuss practical
solutions to a wide range of challenges.

In more than 40 workshops, participants will explore how to expand and
strengthen democracy in their countries and in their regions of the world; how
to strengthen civic groups, political parties and the media; how to increase
accountability of political institutions; and how to use civic education and
culture as a means of promoting democratic values. Other areas of discussion
include increasing women's participation, the challenges of working in conflict-
ridden societies, transitional justice, among others.

Kabissa's Kim Lowery will moderate a workshop on Using New Technologies in NGO
Networking in collaboration with Rakhee Goyal of Women's Learning Partnership
for Rights, Development and Peace. One of Kabissa's key partners from Nigeria,
Edetaen Ojo of Media Rights Agenda, will be one of six panelists in the
session. Our workshop will draw on lessons learned by NGOs around the world to
enable participants to discuss ways to use the Internet and other emerging
technologies for knowledge sharing, cooperative learning, and advocacy.
Discussions will focus on how technology can be helpful in NGO work, what the
challenges are to using them effectively, and how they can enhance the ways in
which NGOs connect with each other to share information and experiences, launch
new collaborative initiatives, and build relationships of solidarity and
support.

While at the assembly, Kim will distribute 200 copies of Kabissa's acclaimed
Time To Get Online Internet learning materials to participants from Africa. The
materials are a key part of Kabissa's program to support the efforts of African
civil society organizations to build their technological capacity and integrate
the Internet into their activities. She will also run two Technology Training
Sessions on Web Site Planning and Avoiding E-mail Spam and Scams.
