WSSD: alternative media took to the net
The World Summit was covered by a number of independent online media portals and initiatives. Take a look at this brief - and by no means exhaustive - list.
Africa Pulse, SADC community publishing portal located in Johannesburg, was an constant source of information during WSSD, as well as a providing a means for civil society to publish information. Site hits (visits) increased exponentially during WSSD.
Another interesting source was the weblog dailysummit.net. It's still running commentary and links to issues in follow up to the Summit, and is truly worth a visit.
Women'sNet trained volunteers to help run a cybercafe at the Women's Centre on Constitution Hill. The Feminist Internet Radio Endeavor (FIRE), broadcast in streaming audio from the cybercafe.
And of course - indymedia was there too.
If only everybody had access to this information. Some of hte people who are being written about cannot read it because they are nowhere near an enabling infrastructure or cannot afford the technology. However, at least organisations at WSSD who were representing their interests had a means for publication.
