  • South Africa: An open letter of SAFTU to the Communist Party

Zwelinzima Vavi | Popular Participation & Democratization
    13.07.2017

The South African Federation of Trade Unions turned down an invitation to the congress of the South African Communist Party. SACP is an ally of the ruling African National Congress. SAFTU says SACP is as guilty as the Jacob Zuma government in implementing a neoliberal programme that is anti-poor, anti-working class, pro-capitalist and anti-socialist.

  • Populism on the rise as South Africa and Namibia gear up to elect new presidents

Henning Melber and Chris Saunders | Popular Participation & Democratization
    31.05.2017

The ruling parties in the two countries have adjusted in different ways since taking power. SWAPO has entrenched its political dominance in all spheres of society since independence. The ANC is in decline and faces massive public protest and political opposition. In both cases the presidents have resorted to populism to pursue their agendas.

  • The bigotry underlying the notion of state capture in South Africa

Gerard Boyce | Popular Participation & Democratization
    31.05.2017

The notion of state capture is currently very topical in South Africa, in both popular and academic circles. According to the popular view, President Jacob Zuma, along with a number of senior civil servants, has been captured and is doing the bidding of a well-heeled expatriate Indian family, the Guptas. A more plausible explanation of the nature of this relationship is required.

  • “Zuma Must Fall” and the Left: Lessons from Zimbabwe

Munyaradzi Gwisai | Popular Participation & Democratization
    31.05.2017

Faced with a growing crisis, President  Zuma has raised the prospect of a radical reorientation of the ANC and the possibility of radical economic transformation. Alarmed, another faction of the South Africa’s capitalist class has thrown its support behind the Zuma Must Fall movement. In this article Zimbabwean socialist Munyaradzi Gwisai unpicks the situation in South Africa. He explains that the working class and poor must avoid the dangers of both Zuma’s ‘fake left-turn’ and the Zuma Must Fall protests. What are the lessons, Gwisai asks, for South Africa from the movement that rose-up against Mugabe in Zimbabwe in the late 1990s?

  • Zuma’s not junk, he’s just lost our marbles

Douglas Schorr | Popular Participation & Democratization
    04.05.2017

Zuma shouldn’t be president, that’s obvious. But that he is the problem and that to replace him with Gordhan or Rhamaposa is the answer, is totally misguided. The problem reaches back to Zuma’s predecessors and to economic policy as a whole. Zuma is a symptom, not the cause.

  • WEF-Africa hosts a turf battle between Zuma and ‘white monopoly capital’

Patrick Bond | Labour & Political Economy
    04.05.2017

At a time US and South African presidents Donald Trump and Jacob Zuma personify controversies over crony capitalism, corruption, populist rhetoric and self-serving economic strategies, will big business calm down the politicians – or just egg them on?

  • A South African ruling class brawl

    Shawn Hattingh | Governance
    06.04.2017

Given the corruption and exploitation by the top dogs within the factions of the ruling ANC, it is clear that none of the factions has anything to offer the working people of South Africa. Instead of backing one faction over the other, the working class (and the black section in particular) rather needs to fight against class rule, capitalism and the state. That is the system that is rotten to the core.

  • Jacob Zuma: A victim of white monopoly capital?

Sean Muller | Labour & Political Economy
    16.02.2017

The evidence available contradicts the propaganda the South African president and his backers are attempting to disseminate: Zuma has been, not a victim, but a friend of both white monopoly capital and organisations linked to Western intelligence agencies when it suits him.

  • How Biko helps us to think Black

    Neo Mokatsanyane | Global Pan-Africanism
    29.09.2016

To think Black first is a revolutionary call to equip Black people with the necessary mental and practical capacity to liberate themselves from the bottom of society where white supremacy through slavery, colonialism and apartheid has condemned them. The legacy of Biko teaches that to think Black first is the means to end divisions among Black people and to forge a united front against white power.

  • Zuma: The bitter taste of honey!

    Abdulrazaq Magaji | Governance
    28.04.2016

Stiff-necked apartheid high priests had their problems but none of them contemplated the type of weird political culture the ANC and President Zuma are foisting on post-apartheid South Africa!

  • How liberators turn into oppressors: A study of southern African states

Henning Melber | Popular Participation & Democratization
    14.04.2016

It is normal for resistance movements to adopt rough survival strategies and techniques while fighting an oppressive regime. Unfortunately, such confrontational mentality becomes entrenched in an authoritarian political culture that is based on the claim that liberators have an entitlement to rule within a new elite project.
