  • South Africa: An open letter of SAFTU to the Communist Party

Zwelinzima Vavi | Popular Participation & Democratization
    13.07.2017

The South African Federation of Trade Unions turned down an invitation to the congress of the South African Communist Party. SACP is an ally of the ruling African National Congress. SAFTU says SACP is as guilty as the Jacob Zuma government in implementing a neoliberal programme that is anti-poor, anti-working class, pro-capitalist and anti-socialist.

  • Diana Johnstone: Financial elite created France's new president, Emmanuel Macron

Ann Garrison | Global South & Transnational Struggles
    18.05.2017

Elites whipped up mass hysteria that Le Pen is a fascist to put the neoliberal globalist Macron in power. Macron and the rest of the globalist elite are advancing an order in which global capital freely chases cheap all over the world, then comes back to sell products with no tariffs, and even sues any government that becomes inconvenient for them.

  • Understanding Africa’s middle classes: A book review

Roger Southall | Labour & Political Economy
    21.04.2017

A major claim of the purveyors of the ‘Africa rising’ narrative is the expansion of the African middle classes. Africanist scholarship has built upon this narrative, placing heavy emphasis upon such key issues as definition, consumption and the fragility of the ‘new’ middle classes across the continent. This book, the latest such offering amidst a burgeoning literature, confirms this trend, and is set to become a standard work of reference.

  • Pan African activism meets Mamdanisation

Bwesigye Bwa Mwesigire | Global Pan-Africanism
    21.04.2017

Theory and practice have been butting heads at Makerere University’s Institute of Social Research, resulting in graduate students decrying the “authoritarian” leadership style of its director, public intellectual and crusader for the decolonisation of higher education, Mahmood Mamdani. Bwesigye Bwa Mwesigire chronicles the machinations of a protracted struggle against perceived creeping neoliberalism.

National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa | Popular Participation & Democratization
    02.02.2017

With the internet and all other technologies which can connect the world working class into a global fighting force to defeat global capitalism which is threatening not only human life but the entirety of our universe, there have never been better conditions for the success of the global Socialist Revolution than now.

Yash Tandon | Global South & Transnational Struggles

The future is still largely open-ended. Trump could try to make a difference, but whether he would succeed or not depends on many systemic and structural constraints at both national and global levels.

  • Bring back corruption: A critique of neoliberal anti-corruption rhetoric

Moses E. Ochonu | Popular Participation & Democratization
    08.09.2016

Nigeria is gripped by the familiar anxieties of an economy in distress. This escalating crisis has demystified a president once thought capable of astute, if not magical, economic management. In their desperation for respite, many Nigerians are now paradoxically yearning for the corruption that they and their leaders blame for their economic woes.

  • The retreat of neoliberalism

William Gumede | Labour & Political Economy
    21.07.2016

An internal IMF report admitting the destructive nature of neoliberalism may have come too late for many African countries. The neoliberal structural adjustment programs have led to economic hardships, political instability and conflicts in most African countries where they have been implemented.
