A Kigali court has imposed a one-year sentence on Agnès Nkusi Uwimana, the editor of the fortnightly Umurabyo, after she pleaded guilty to charges of “creating divisions,” “sectarianism” and “defamation.” Uwimana had been held since 12 January for writing a column headlined “You have problems if you kill a Tutsi, but you go free if you kill a Hutu.” She recognised in court “the gravity of my writings” and promised to “publish a correction.”

The Director of Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ) Keith Goddard has accused a Zimbabwean daily newspaper, ZimDaily, of irresponsible journalism. Education delivery in Zimbabwe's rural communities has all but disintegrated and experts warn that any gains made after independence are rapidly being reversed in the continuing economic meltdown. President Thabo Mbeki formally launched the Nepad e-Schools Demo Project in South Africa on Tuesday 17 April, with the opening of a computer lab and audio-visual centre at Maripe Secondary School, in Mpumalanga. Maripe is one of six schools in South Africa in which computer labs and audio-visual centres will be installed as part of the demo project, which includes 18 African countries.

Rwanda is set to export 3D graphic drawing computer system to manufacturing companies in the United States (US). Dr Raphael Mmasi, the Director of National Computing Centre (NCC)of Rwanda Information and Technology Authority (RITA) told HANA recently that the 3D graphic drawing computer system would help manufacturing companies in US and around the world streamline product development, cut costs and re-use design data.

The Ugandan government with the help of an American company called Inveneo Inc has invented a computer to aid rural Uganda. Uganda's Minister of State for ICT Alintuma Nsambu told Highway Africa News Agency that since early this year the government has been working with the Americans to develop the computer, the first of its kind on the African continent.

Two new Lagos-based broadcast media, Link FM and GTV, were abruptly shut down by the security forces on Wednesday 11 April, three days before elections for state governors and state parliaments. Eight members of the security forces burst into the Link FM and GTV studios in the Lagos district of Ketu, ordering all the employees to leave and placing seals over the entrances.

Abdulkadir Ashir "Nadara," head of the privately-owned TV station Universal TV, journalist Bashir Dirie Nalei and cameraman Hamud Mohammed Osman were arrested on 8 April at Mogadishu airport and have been held since then. The three journalists had covered a press conference by President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, during which "Nadara" had asked him about favouritism in his choice of officials.
